Counselling
You don’t always have to figure things out by yourself. Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to someone who knows how the mind works and who can help you understand what’s going on.
Counselling can help you understand yourself better, so you can get more control over your feelings and your actions. Counselling can also teach you skills to help you cope better and feel better.
Counselling can help you through a problem or a crisis, make changes or set new goals for your life, or just help you to be happier and stronger as a person.
Some of the things we have helped people with are:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Fears and phobias
- Grief and loss
- Discrimination and prejudice
- Sexuality and identity
- Relationship problems
- Family problems
- Anger management
- Survivors of child abuse, sexual abuse, bullying and trauma
Trauma Counselling
Sometimes things happen that cause great suffering or lasting psychological harm. They might happen to us as children or as adults. It might be one event, or many. These things are known as traumas.
Sometimes trauma can lead or contribute to psychological conditions like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Bipolar Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. At Jarawyn we have many years’ experience helping people with these conditions.
Trauma counselling is a special form of counselling that helps people grow beyond their traumas. In modern trauma counselling you don’t have to talk about the bad things that happened to you, unless you want to. Healing and recovery are possible without having to talk about the bad memories.
At Jarawyn we have training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is one of the fastest and most effective ways of healing from PTSD and the effects of trauma.
We have experience with working with adults who have suffered:
- Childhood sexual abuse
- Other forms of child abuse
- Childhood neglect
- Family and domestic violence
- Bullying and bastardisation
- Adult sexual abuse
- Assaults
- Accidents and injuries
- World events like climate change and terrorism
- Deep psychological problems that you don't know the cause of
We have worked with the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the National Redress Scheme.
We also work with partners, family members and supporters of trauma survivors. We can help you understand and support the survivor in your life, and we can also help you directly with the challenges this can sometimes create. If this is you, contact us to see how we can help.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an innovative treatment for trauma and anxiety. EMDR allows the brain to reprocess triggering or traumatic memories so that they are less distressing. EMDR has been shown to be successful for a lot of different types of distress.
EMDR is one of the quickest and most efficient ways of managing trauma and anxiety.
EMDR can help with:
- Flashbacks
- Panic attacks
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Depression
- Sexual or physical abuse
- Childhood trauma
- PTSD
- Dissociation
- Phobias
Phobia Treatment
Many people have intense fears of particular things. Fears like these are called phobias and might include fears of being alone, meeting people, heights, particular animals and so on. Sometimes these fears seem out of proportion or don’t make sense.
At other times we can get stuck in our heads or find it impossible to stop thinking about some things. These are known as obsessive thoughts.
At Jarawyn we have training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is one of the fastest and most effective ways of getting past phobias and out-of-proportion fears.
Phobias and obsessive thoughts might include:
- Flying
- Heights
- Spiders
- Mice and rats
- Dogs
- Dentists
- Needles (injections)
- Putting things off (procrastination)
- Needing to get everything right or perfect (perfectionism)
- Being home alone
- Going outside (agoraphobia)
- Social anxiety or intense shyness
- Feeling like you have to check things many times
- Feeling like you have to think certain things, or not being able to stop thinking about certain things
- Feeling like you have to clean yourself many times
There are many phobias so if the thing you are worried about doesn’t appear on this list we can probably still help.
